Japanese Hot Stone Massage evolved from Anma, a traditional Japanese massage therapy which is over a thousand years old. Japanese massage uses techniques such as kneading, rotation and vibration and is based on concepts such as yin/yang, the flow of ki and Five Element theory. Japanese Hot Stone builds upon these ancient ideas and combines the principles of acupressure, moxabustion (heat treatment) and Anma massage techniques to give a complete therapeutic treatment, relaxing the mind, releasing tension and revitalizing the body and bringing enhanced flow of vital energy.

Japan is a land formed from volcanic activity and there are thousands of hot springs with mineral rich waters used since ancient times to heal and refresh the sick and the weary. The water that bubbles from the hot springs can be just below boiling point, although small streams mix with the springs to cool the temperature. Black basalt and other volcanic rocks are found in the volcanic springs, and over many, many years they are both heated and smoothed by the flow of water. These stones are traditionally used to massage tense, painful areas, to provide comforting warmth and help relax and promote the flow of ki.

Japanese Hot Stone can be gentle, calming and warming to relieve stress, or it can be deep and penetrating in order to reduce back, neck and shoulder tension and pain. The treatment can be used with or without oil and can be applied through the towel – this means that it is suitable for clients with allergies, and for those who are very modest.

The techniques are easy to learn – this is a beautiful form of hot stone therapy and a good way to gain an introduction to Japanese and Asian bodywork.  From the therapist’s point of view, the treatment creates little stress on the hands so it is useful for massage practitioners who have hand or thumb injuries, or who get tired hands and wrists.
